FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) was founded by inventor Dean Kamen in 1989 to inspire young people's interest and participation in science and technology. Based in Manchester, NH, the not-for-profit organization designs accessible, innovative programs that motivate young people to pursue education and career opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and math, while building self-confidence, knowledge, and life skills.
Their mission is to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders, by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering and technology skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication, and leadership.
At this exciting time in their history, FIRST is seeking a strategic and creative Director of Marketing to oversee all aspects of their marketing and communications work. Reporting to the Vice President of Strategy and Impact and working with a strong team, the Director will be responsible for increasing the organization’s presence with core audiences and increasing FIRST’s brand recognition, leading to increased program access, participation and impact. In addition, the Director will be responsible for meeting the marketing needs of FIRST’s staff, ensuring a strong presence and brand consistency across functions.


  • Develop, implement and evaluate the success of a strategic marketing plan designed to increase FIRST’s brand identity, broaden awareness of its programs, and drive growth and retention of participants (mentors, students volunteers) and donors (corporate sponsors, foundations, and individual donors).
  • Provide supportive leadership to a high performing team charged with promoting the activities of FIRST and supporting the various program areas
  • Oversee core messaging to ensure that it reflects the strategic direction of the organization and is also fully integrated and consistent across the various program lines.
  • Oversee the organization’s innovative use of a broad array of marketing tactics that will create increased awareness, engagement, and conversion with targeted organizations and individuals.
  • Oversee the organization’s media relations strategy and approach including working with internal staff and outside consultants to most effectively communicate the vision and mission of the organization using general media, consumer publications and social media.
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with all outside partners and agencies associated with marketing, communications, and PR activities, including graphic designers, photographers, media and others
  • Oversee the day-to-day activities of the marketing functions including budgeting, planning and staff development

  • Creativity, a highly strategic mindset and the demonstrated ability to define a comprehensive and compelling marketing strategy and then lead the organization through the execution of that strategy. Well versed in brand strategy and brand-building.
  • Experience designing and implementing a broad array of marketing tactics, targeted at both organizations and individuals, including but not limited to: content marketing, advertising (digital, social, search engine, native, print), SEO, e-mail, public relations, social media, events, trade shows.
  • Energetic and inspiring communication and presentation skills; able to deliver compelling presentations to Board members, donors and other stakeholders in day-to-day work and at industry conferences and events
  • Exceptional management skills with experience leading teams and the capacity to inspire and motivate a team to achieve exceptional results
  • Strong organizational and financial management skills and excellent budgeting and business planning skills
  • Well-versed in latest marketing trends and technologies; understands how to leverage marketing automation tools, marketing data and analytics, SEO tools
  • 10+ years of work experience, 5 years of senior leadership experience in a marketing role
  • High energy, able to work both at both a strategic and hands-on level
  • Strong leadership skills demonstrating vision and an entrepreneurial spirit
  • Strong affinity for technology and experience identifying ways to capitalize on technology to achieve a mission; experience with specific marketing software tools a plus
  • Prior work experience in non-profit organization or social venture a plus
  • Experience in the K-12 education space a plus
  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field or equivalent experience required
