FIRST Scholarship Provider: Syracuse University

Hello from Syracuse University!

I hope you're enjoying the SKYSTONE season or looking forward to the upcoming INFINITE RECHARGE season. I'm a freshman Electrical Engineering major at Syracuse University, and FIRST was a big part of my life in high school. During my senior year, I was Co-CEO of FIRST Robotics Competition Team 1073: The Force Team, of Hollis, NH, and prior to that I was on the 1073 Electrical Subgroup for three years.

My first semester at Syracuse has been an exciting adjustment to college life. My favorite class is ECS 102: Intro to Computing, where I have learned Python programming. Professor Marjory Baruch has a unique teaching style which allows us to experience labs prior to lectures. I also have enjoyed my ECS 101: Introduction to Engineering class, where we have experimented in C++ programming in order to program a robot to guide itself through a maze.  I have used the technical knowledge gained from my FIRST experience to successfully build projects in these classes. The connections between FIRST and my first-semester classes at Syracuse have assured me that I am pursuing a very rewarding field.

As a first-year engineering student, I'm living in the Engineering and Computer Science (ECS) Learning Community with about 175 other ECS freshmen.  This has been very valuable in helping me meet other like-minded people to work together on homework and study for exams.

One of my favorite experiences outside of engineering has been my involvement with the Syracuse Sailing Team. I've made great friends through this experience and competed in several regattas in Maryland over a few weekends this semester.  The Sailing Team has had several holiday socials, including "Sailsgiving" in November and "Sailsmas" in December. I made a trip to Wegmans (which definitely lived up to the hype!) and managed to throw together homemade guacamole in my dorm room for the team's pot luck.

Every Wednesday, I look forward to getting breakfast with some friends from the ECS Learning Community at Varsity, which is a legendary establishment on the SU campus. To de-stress, I like having dance parties with my roommate, and I also enjoy cheering on the Orange football and basketball teams in the Dome, our on-campus stadium.

Syracuse offers $25K scholarships to FIRST students that are renewable for four years.  You can find the scholarship form here, and you can learn more about engineering and computer science opportunities on the Syracuse website.  We also have some fun, short videos about each engineering and computer science major on our website as well.

Don't hesitate to contact me if I can help you with any questions about the opportunities at Syracuse!
