“When I gave this thing the name FIRST, I said 'It's all about inspiration. If we don’t change what they’re inspired by, the world will.’ When I thought about that, it never occurred to me that one of the people who would end up being inspired is me. By all of you … And I hope that you all inspire each other.”

Welcome to Inspire, a new blog from FIRST. After 26 years of inspiring young people, as well as the adults who work with them, we decided it was time to share some of the things that inspire us.

As you may know, the mission of FIRST is to inspire young people. Similarly, the mission of the Inspire blog is to inspire young people, and additionally, the people that touch their lives, including parents, educators, mentors, and future employers. That’s a lot of inspiring, we know. But it’s what we do best.

Inspire will cover a wide range of topics, including:

  • Ways to help young people become  critical thinkers, better citizens, and the next generation of innovators and leaders, equipped to solve the world’s most pressing problems
  • Inspiring stories from FIRST participants, Alumni, Mentors, Volunteers, parents, and supporters
  • Views on education best practices in STEM, innovation, entrepreneurism, as well as creativity, critical thinking, and other 21st century skills
  • Ideas and practices on ways to ensure all people, regardless of their background, are able to reach their full potential by having equitable access to education and programs such as FIRST
  • Ideas from the greatest thinkers and leaders in fields such as education, technology, business, behavioral economics, psychology, and sociology, and others
  • And much, much more.

You can expect posts written not only by us here at FIRST but also by industry experts; leaders in technology, science, engineering, and math; and people passionate about education, mentorship, volunteerism and more.

We plan to share articles several times a month, so check back often. And if you have an inspiring story or piece of wisdom that you’ve picked up through your experiences in the FIRST community, please reach out to us at and inquire about becoming a guest writer for Inspire.
