Floater

Floaters are flexible, go-to volunteers who step in wherever they’re most needed to keep the event running smoothly. They assist with a variety of tasks including volunteer coverage, logistics support, and team guidance. 

Volunteer as a Floater

Floaters provide support throughout the event as directed by the Volunteer Coordinator or other key volunteers. They may cover for last-minute volunteer absences, allow other volunteers to take breaks, or help with event logistics like distributing awards or guiding teams. The Floater role is ideal for someone who enjoys variety and is willing to jump into different tasks throughout the day.

Minimum Age: depending upon role assigned (13-18+ years old)

Experience: No FIRST or related experience required

  • Experience with FIRST LEGO League helpful, especially for supporting team-facing tasks 

Training: No pre-event training required 

  •  On-site orientation provided by Volunteer Coordinator or Tournament Director

Role Details / Responsibilities:

  • Help distribute awards, manage team flow, support practice fields, and staff other roles as needed 
  • Great for volunteers who enjoy multitasking and staying active 
  • Support a variety of event areas as needed, sometimes with little notice 
  • Cover positions for “no-show” volunteers or give scheduled volunteers a break 
  • Act as messengers, troubleshooters, and guides throughout the venue 
  • Assist with logistics like distributing pins, medals, trophies, or managing practice fields 
  • Support cleanup, team flow, food stands, or other event operations as assigned 
  • Provide a flexible and helpful attitude in a dynamic environment 
  • Must read and comply with the Volunteer Handbook

FIRST LEGO League Explore & FIRST LEGO League Challenge:

  • Floaters support various event tasks including practice field flow, awards distribution, event navigation, and team assistance 
  • Shifts may be assigned for greater flexibility; full-day availability not required 
  • Championship Volunteer Time Commitment: 
    • Thursday and/or Friday, 7:45 AM – 5:00 PM 
    • Flexible shift-based scheduling available
