Get Started with FIRST® Robotics Competition
Students ages 14-18 (grades 9-12) design, build, and program industrial-sized robots to play an action-packed game. They compete on a themed field in a yearly game that brings a new challenge and exciting learning opportunities to collaborate and problem-solve year after year.

Who do I need on my team?
Who do I need on my team?
Anyone can join FIRST Robotics Competition regardless of previous technical experience. While there is no ideal number of students on a team, we find many teams include 10-20 students in grades 9-12. Each team needs two adult lead coaches to help guide the team throughout the season.
- Required: Two (2) lead coaches who facilitate the season and manage the team.
- Required: Students with a variety of talents – no technical experience required!
- Optional: Additional mentors with both technical and non-technical expertise who support the team (parents, teachers, engineers, FIRST alumni)

To support teams in their robot creation, each new team receives a Kit of Parts with a Drive Base. Other included products from FIRST Suppliers, game pieces, and the KitBot help teams prepare for the season.
- Kickoff Kit: Basic game-specific robot and other robot supplies. Rookie teams also receive a Drive Base included with their Kickoff Kit.
- KitBot: Build guide and materials designed to play some aspects of the yearly game.
- Virtual Kit: Products available directly from FIRST Suppliers via download or custom order.
- FIRST Choice: Items available via an online menu purchased with credits issued to teams.
- Purchased separately: Power tools, computers/software
- Space to meet as a team/build your team’s robot.

How much does it cost?
Depending on your team and region, costs to support your team’s season will vary. In addition to the yearly registration fee, you will also want to plan for extra tools, machine parts, and travel to/from competitions.
- Season Registration (includes Kickoff Kit, FIRST Choice, and Virtual Kit)
- Event participation (beyond event(s) covered by registration fee)
- Extra parts and tools
- Team travel/associated costs

Registration Details
How do I register?
All FIRST Robotics Competition teams register through the FIRST Dashboard. Follow these steps to get started. Gather your Sales Tax Exemption Certificate (if applicable) and be prepared to add it to your Dashboard during the registration process.
Steps to Register in the FIRST Dashboard
Follow these steps to complete your registration.
- Create a FIRST account (or login if you already have an account).
- Create a new FIRST Robotics Competition team profile from the “My Teams” tab.
- Under Team Finances, select the shopping cart to view your order information.
- Pay your season registration fee or generate a quote.*
