Event Volunteer Role

Student Ambassador

As a Student Ambassador, you’ll proudly represent FIRST by welcoming guests, leading pit tours, and sharing your team’s journey and the impact of the program—all while helping others experience the excitement and inspiration of a FIRST event. This role is a great way for current students to practice leadership and communication skills while celebrating the values and community of FIRST.

Available at FIRST Championship with FIRST Robotics Competition and FIRST Tech Challenge

Student Ambassadors work to share the FIRST experience with event attendees, invited guests, and VIPs. They educate and engage guests by discussing build season, the game challenge and how the program builds self-confidence and problem-solving skills, These discussions inspire the guest’s continued motivation, passion, and commitment to FIRST.

Minimum Age: 13 years old

Experience: No FIRST or related field experience required

Training: No pre-event training required

Role Details / Responsibilities:

  • Conduct tours of the Pit
  • Interact with teams and students
  • Interface with invited guests
  • Current students on FIRST teams are encouraged to apply for this role
  • General knowledge of FIRST preferred including:
    • Build season length and restrictions
    • Robot design & building materials
    • Fundraising/Sponsorship methods
    • Other FIRST programs
  • Knowledge of current year’s game preferred including:
    • Scoring strategies & values
    • Game objectives
    • Robot build-restrictions
  • Volunteers should focus on the role they are filling at that event. This includes:
    • Helping avoid the appearance of bias by not cheering for one specific team when wearing official event apparel (volunteer shirt or FIRST/Partner staff clothing). Instead, we encourage volunteers to cheer for all teams equally. 
    • Refrain from accessing sensitive event areas unless they are necessary to fulfill your volunteer role for this event. This can include playing field access, scoring table and judging rooms.
    • Wearing volunteer specific apparel (e.g. FTA shirt, Robot Inspector hat, etc) only when filling that specific role.

Volunteer Time Commitment:
  • Can be divided among multiple volunteers for the duration of the event
  • Time commitment varies by event

Role Training:

  • The Student Ambassador Coordinator conducts training and provides guidance during the competition.

  • Championship Volunteer Time Commitment:
    • Pre-event training and certification required
    • Each student will sign up for a two-hour time slot after completing the certification
