Tournament / Event Director

 As a Tournament/Event Director, you’ll lead the planning and execution of an inspiring, well-organized FIRST event—working closely with Program Delivery Partners to create an unforgettable experience for teams, volunteers, and spectators. This key leadership role is ideal for experienced, detail-oriented individuals who enjoy big-picture thinking, logistics coordination, and making a meaningful impact. 

Volunteer as a Tournament / Event Director

A Tournament/Event Director is responsible for planning and delivering FIRST events in cooperation with their Program Delivery Partner.

Minimum Age: 21 years old

Experience: Both FIRST and related field experience required

Training: Significant pre-event training required

Role Details / Responsibilities:

  • Volunteers should focus on the role they are filling at that event. This includes:
    • Helping avoid the appearance of bias by not cheering for one specific team when wearing official event apparel (volunteer shirt or FIRST/Partner staff clothing). Instead, we encourage volunteers to cheer for all teams equally.  
    • Refrain from accessing sensitive event areas unless they are necessary to fulfill your volunteer role for this event. This can include playing field access, scoring table and judging rooms.
    • Wearing volunteer specific apparel (e.g. FTA shirt, Robot Inspector hat, etc) only when filling that specific role.

Oversees all aspects of the tournament and reports to the region’s FIRST LEGO League Program Delivery Partner.

Tournament / Event Director with FIRST Tech Challenge

The Event Director’s role is to plan and deliver FIRST Tech Challenge events, following the requirements in the agreement between the Program Delivery Partner (PDP) and the Event Director, or between the PDP and FIRST.

  • Works with the PDP to secure event venues for the season’s events.
  • Creates event schedule, including judging schedules and match schedules.
  • Creates floor plan and event layout for event day.
  • Sets up load-in/load-out schedule.
  • Works with the volunteer coordinator to identify staffing needs for the entire event.
  • Serves as the principal liaison with the facility manager.
  • Coordinates food, t-shirts, etc. for the event.

Role Training:

  • FIRST experience. High level of technical knowledge and interpersonal skills.
  • FIRST Training Course and monthly training calls
