Practice Field Attendant

As a Practice Field Attendant, you'll help teams make the most of their event experience by managing safe, fair, and efficient access to the practice field. This behind-the-scenes role supports team success by keeping the area organized, monitoring equipment use, and creating a welcoming, team-friendly environment.

Volunteer as a Practice Field Attendant

The Practice Field Attendant plays an important role in helping teams prepare for competition by managing access to the practice field area, ensuring safety, and supporting fair and efficient field use. Practice Field Attendants monitor team activity, maintain equipment, assist with scheduling (if applicable), and help create a positive, team-friendly environment.
Volunteers in this role ensure teams have equitable access to practice time, enforce safety procedures, and report equipment issues. This position is best suited for organized, proactive individuals who enjoy supporting teams and maintaining a smooth event flow.

Minimum Age: varies by program (see below)

Experience: No FIRST or related field experience required

Training: No pre-event training required

Role Details / Responsibilities:

  • Implement FIRST safety standards and help manage safety for the event
  • Maintain a schedule at the practice field, monitor flow of teams, ensure fair use of field
  • Volunteers should focus on the role they are filling at that event. This includes:
    • Helping avoid the appearance of bias by not cheering for one specific team when wearing official event apparel (volunteer shirt or FIRST/Partner staff clothing). Instead, we encourage volunteers to cheer for all teams equally.  
    • Refrain from accessing sensitive event areas unless they are necessary to fulfill your volunteer role for this event. This can include playing field access, scoring table and judging rooms.
    • Wearing volunteer specific apparel (e.g. FTA shirt, Robot Inspector hat, etc) when filling that specific role.

Program Role Details

Practice Field Attendant with FIRST Tech Challenge

The practice field attendant is responsible for supervising the practice field area, including watching team use of the field and game elements.

  • Report any malfunctions or field damage to the Field Supervisor / FIRST Technical Advisor
  • Keep the practice field clean of debris
  • Ensure all teams are given equitable access to the practice field

Minimum Age: 15 years old

Role Training:

  • Provided on-site

Reports to: Pit Administrator

Practice Field Attendant with FIRST Robotics Competition

  • Report any malfunctions or field damage to the Field Supervisor / FIRST Technical Advisor
  • Keep the practice field clean of debris
  • Ensure all teams are given equitable access to the practice field
  • Basic knowledge of the game and match process is helpful
  • Self-directed individual preferred

Minimum Age: 18 (must be post-high school or equivalent)

  • Exceptions may be granted by event Volunteer Coordinators, after review and approval by the local Program Delivery Partner  

Volunteer Time Commitment:

  • Minimum 1/2 day commitment
  • Preferred 2 full day commitment (Districts) or 3 full day commitment (Regionals)

  • Volunteer Coordinator. Technical supervision provided by FIRST Technical Advisor (FTA) or FIRST Technical Advisor Assistant (FTAA, if the FTA is unavailable).
