Quiet Rooms at FIRST Robotics Competition Events

In recent years, several FIRST Robotics Competition events have been experimenting with ‘Quiet Rooms.’ These are rooms in less-trafficked areas of venues set aside as quiet spaces for participants to de-stress and take a break from the general business of the event. They typically have chairs, tables, and resources for quiet activities such as coloring and crossword puzzles. Our friends at The Compass Alliance, as part of their Hear for You campaign, have developed resources for events to use in putting quiet rooms in place. These are being shared with FRC event leadership. If you would like to, you can take a look here.

FIRST is not requiring Quiet Rooms at events. While the feedback we’ve received on Quiet Rooms where implemented has been very positive, we recognize that not all events may have the space or other resources required. However, we are asking all events to consider the option of implementing Quiet Rooms.

It’s also important to recognize that Quiet Rooms are not intended to take the place of professional counseling or emergency services. Any event attendee experiencing a crisis or emergency should contact emergency services on-site or phone the appropriate service.

We believe this is a step forward in our ability to provide positive experiences for event attendees, and want to give a big thanks to The Compass Alliance for all their work in making this happen!

What a brilliant idea! So many kids need this to de-compress during the very stimulating events including myself as a mentor.

Will you have Quiet Rooms available at FIRST Championship?

As a mentor with a couple students who with Asperger syndrome this is very welcomed.  Last weekend at our Lego League competition we we had a similar issue... there the excess noise was from the "music".

Hearing safety is just as important as eye safety.

Thank You!!!

Why is the P.A. at FIRST events so loud that it will cause ear ringing and permanent hearing damage to attendees?  That is not necessary for the purpose of the event.  Yes, we can use ear plugs, as I do, but why should I need to use hearing protection in an event where there is no need for extremely loud noise.  It's not like motor racing, where the competing machines are very noisy.

Do you plan on releasing an explanation of all the icons and abbreviations on the score board? Not sure what all the flags and octagons mean. Thank you

Hi Kevin!

Please find detailed information about the Audience Display here: https://www.firstinspires.org/robotics/frc/blog/2019-FIRST-DESTINATION-DEEP-SPACE-Audience-Displays

Some of the suggested resources seem lacking. I think for de-stressing of young engineering students they tend to want to keep their minds focused and coloring books and crossword puzzles in the age of electronics seams remedial. Possibly provide phone charging ports. Rubics cubes. Or been bag chairs that they can lay back and listen to their music with some headphones on.

As for the more artistically inclined... gridded art paper.

Love the basic concept though. Could have used it this last weekend.

Hi Dennis.

Thanks for your feedback! We look forward to creating more resources for the 2020 season.

Thanks!
