Event Volunteer Role

Safety Attendant

Safety Attendants help maintain a safe and welcoming environment at FIRST events by supporting Safety Glass Stations, ensuring pedestrian safety, and reinforcing FIRST safety practices. It’s a great role for volunteers who enjoy helping others and promoting safety awareness.

Volunteer as a Safety Attendant

Safety Attendants support the event in keeping the venue safe and organized. Volunteers may be stationed at Safety Glass Stations, monitor pit and field access, distribute earplugs and glasses(as required), and/or assist with traffic flow throughout the venue. They are vital to ensuring all participants and guests follow safety protocols and that safety materials are properly managed throughout the event.

Minimum Age: 13 years old

Experience: No FIRST or related field experience required

Training: No pre-event training required

Role Details / Responsibilities:

  • Greet visitors and distribute safety glasses at Safety Glass Stations
  • Clean and restock safety glasses, earplugs, and related supplies (as applicable)
  • Monitor pedestrian flow in pits and field areas; keep aisles and walkways clear
  • Help limit access to restricted areas like the playing field
  • Demonstrate and encourage Gracious Professionalism when enforcing safety rules
  • Assist with the secure storage of safety glasses and supplies at the end of each day
  • Communicate with the Safety Manager and Event Manager regarding low supplies or additional needs (as applicable)
  • Volunteers should focus on the role they are filling at that event. This includes:
    • Helping avoid the appearance of bias by not cheering for one specific team when wearing official event apparel (volunteer shirt or FIRST/Partner staff clothing). Instead, we encourage volunteers to cheer for all teams equally.
    • Refrain from accessing sensitive event areas unless they are necessary to fulfill your volunteer role for this event. This can include playing field access, scoring table and judging rooms.
    • Wearing volunteer specific apparel (e.g. FTA shirt, Robot Inspector hat, etc) only when filling that specific role
  • Must read and comply with the Volunteer Handbook
