As a Special Operations volunteer, you’ll enjoy a dynamic, team-based experience while supporting a variety of essential event roles—from greeting teams to helping with safety and logistics. This flexible position is perfect for friendly, adaptable individuals (15+) who want to explore different ways to make an impact at FIRST Championship. 

Volunteer as a Special Operations Volunteer

FIRST Robotics Competition Championship Only

Special Operations volunteers assist with a variety of tasks. This role was created to help groups volunteer together and to help expose new volunteers to a variety of FIRST volunteer roles. Teams of volunteers will rotate between positions such as Team Load In/Out, Quiet Room Attendant, Safety Glasses Table, Crowd Control and any other role we may need to fill the day of the event.

Minimum Age: 15 years old

Experience: No FIRST or Related Field Experience required

Training: No pre-event training required

  • On-site training provided

Role Details:

  • Role responsibilities vary depending on which role you are assigned but can include:
    • Keep aisles, hallways and team traffic pathways clear in the Pit, near the playing field 
    • Help meet, greet, and direct visitors to the event pit areas
    • Provide visitors with safety glasses needed to enter the pit area
    • Help direct teams upon loading in or loading out
    • Help monitor the quiet room
  • Friendly personality
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to take charge; be assertive, but tactful
  • Ability to move about the facility
  • Volunteers should focus on the role they are filling at that event. This includes:
    • Helping avoid the appearance of bias by not cheering for one specific team when wearing official event apparel (volunteer shirt or FIRST/Partner staff clothing). Instead, we encourage volunteers to cheer for all teams equally.  
    • Refrain from accessing sensitive event areas unless they are necessary to fulfill your volunteer role for this event. This can include playing field access, scoring table and judging rooms.
    • Wearing volunteer specific apparel (e.g. FTA shirt, Robot Inspector hat, etc) only when filling that specific role.  
  • Must read and comply with the Volunteer Handbook

Championship Volunteer Time Commitment:

  • Volunteers are needed Wednesday - Saturday
  • Can be divided among multiple volunteers for the duration of the event
  • More information with times will be sent before the event
