Student Ambassador Coordinator

As a Student Ambassador Coordinator, you'll help showcase the heart of FIRST by guiding student ambassadors in welcoming guests with professionalism and enthusiasm. This role is ideal for organized, outgoing adults who enjoy mentoring students and creating meaningful connections between teams and event visitors.

FIRST Robotics Competition Only

Student Ambassador Coordinators assist in facilitating the Ambassador Program and collaborate with Event Management to ensure that all attendees, especially Invited Guests, are welcomed and treated with Gracious Professionalism® . This position provides the opportunity to cultivate support for FIRST programs by showcasing students and teams directly as opposed to being seen at a distance.

Minimum Age: 18 years old (must be post-high school or equivalent)

  • Exceptions may be granted by event Volunteer Coordinators after review and approval by the local Program Delivery Partner 

Experience: Either FIRST or Related Field Experience preferred

Training: Some pre-event training required

  • Data Privacy and Protection Training is required through FIRST Training. 
  • Additional training will be conducted on site by the Program Delivery Partner, Volunteer Coordinator and/or Planning Committee Chair. 

Role Details:

  • Coordinate with Program Delivery Partner and/or Planning Committee Chair before an event to organize a meeting time and location for training ambassadors
  • Work with Program Delivery Partner and/or Planning Committee Chair to generate a schedule for the ambassadors and a "tour route" based on daily activities, queuing, and Pit areas
  • Act as a point of contact for those attending and those who have questions concerning the program
  • Prepare and conduct the training for Ambassadors
  • Explain program and distribute materials
  • Participate in training with Ambassadors and demonstrate proper skills such as eye contact, speaking skills, and good posture
  • Walk previously determined route with Ambassadors
  • Serve as a Point of Contact for Student Ambassadors throughout the event
  • Provide name tags/identifying marks to Ambassadors so that volunteers can identify them easily
  • Ensure enough Ambassadors are near the predetermined staging area to accommodate the ebb and flow of visitors to the event
  • Approachable and friendly personality

  • Strong organizational skills
  • Volunteers should focus on the role they are filling at that event. This includes:
    • Helping avoid the appearance of bias by not cheering for one specific team when wearing official event apparel (volunteer shirt or FIRST/Partner staff clothing). Instead, we encourage volunteers to cheer for all teams equally.  
    • Refrain from accessing sensitive event areas unless they are necessary to fulfill your volunteer role for this event. This can include playing field access, scoring table and judging rooms.
    • Wearing volunteer specific apparel (e.g. FTA shirt, Robot Inspector hat, etc) only when filling that specific role.  
  • Must read and comply with the Volunteer Handbook

Volunteer Time Commitment:

  • Training (half day commitment)
  • Minimum 2 full day commitment

Reports to: Program Delivery Partner, Volunteer Coordinator, and/or Planning Committee Chair

FIRST Championship:

  • Volunteers will:
    • Assist with escorting Student Ambassadors to their training and party.
    • Support Student Ambassadors at the Student Ambassador desk.
    • Assist with promoting and arraging tours for the students to lead onsite.
    • Answer questions from the students as needed.
  • Championship Volunteer Time Commitment:
    • Shifts may be between 3-8 hours. This role is Wednesday-Friday at Championship.
    • More information with times will be sent before the event.
