Event Rules Updates for 2024

A few years ago, we separated the Event Manual from the Game Manual. The thinking was that most of these rules were the same each year and that we could shorten the game manual by keeping it separate. One unintended consequence was that lots of folks now didn’t know that the Event Manual existed.

So, this season we’re putting the Event Manual material back into the Game Manual. Because of that, the rules will not be available until Kickoff. There are a few updates that we want to make you aware of now.

First, motorized carts (i.e. carts with powered propulsion) will not be allowed to be used at events. These carts create safety hazards as the driving could become uncontrolled in potentially crowded areas. This rule is not meant to disallow carts with motorized lifts.

Second, we are explicitly allowing small carts to be on the playing field to help teams get robots on and off the field. The intent here is that teams can put their robots onto something like a furniture dolly to avoid someone having to walk backwards while carrying the robot.

Finally, we are adding a rule to give better guidance on the flag and flagpole size. This is intended to give some guidelines on what is reasonable for an Emcee to wave around at events, but it will be up to each Emcee if they are comfortable waving the flag that is above the limits. We know this rule is new and your team may already have a flag that is above the limits, we will be providing guidance to Emcees to be more lenient this first year.

Drafts of these rules, as we expect them to appear in the official 2024 Game Manual, are below. See you at Kickoff!

Are those flags requirements for flags teams wave in the stands, flags an MC waves, or both?

Hi Michael - The intent is that these are guidelines for the flags that teams bring onto the field to be waved by the MC as part of team introductions. Thank you! -Collin

Our Alumni Kids worked hard to fundraise for a team flag as a parting gift. 3x5 is a standard size, and we have used it for 2 seasons. Never had a problem, and it's the same size as most other teams flags that we have seen at comp. This rule change just seems unfair and not in the spirit of FIRST.

Hi Mark,

Thanks for the feedback, we will share this with our Game Design Team to consider adjusting. Also, as a reminder this rule is a guideline and we do not plan to inspect and measure every flag.

Are the flag guidelines just approximate dimensions or hard limits,

Hi Collin O.! The guidelines are approximate dimensions, not hard limits. Thank you for the question! -Collin F.

Have you considered generating an HTML version of the rules (in addition to the PDF copy which would remain the "official" copy)? Using a PDF on a phone is terrible and we have to look stuff up all the time when a laptop isn't handy.

Hi Caleb,

There is currently an HTML version of the manual as part of the Team Q&A. Any team member can view the HTML version, but only the assigned team representative can ask questions. Please note there is a delay on when the HTML version is available after Kickoff.

Seconding what Caleb said last Thursday, having an identical rules document in web page structure is a very helpful idea.

Does this mean that if our flag is bigger it won't be allowed?

Hi Joshua,

The guidelines are approximate dimensions, not hard limits. As mentioned in the blog, it will be up to each Emcee if they are comfortable waving the flag that is above the limits. We are also providing guidance to Emcees to be more lenient this first year as we know this is a change.

Even though each flag isn't going to be measured please change the flag recommendations to standard size  3' x 5'. I've tried finding smaller flags, 3 x 4 isn't even a "flag".
