Team Avatar Submission System 2019

Jan 21, 2019 Written by Danny Diaz, Systems Engineer, FIRST Robotics Competition.

UPDATE, February 1, 2019. The Team Avatar Submission System will open on Friday, February 8, 2019. We apologize for the inconvenience.

As announced in December, FIRST Robotics Competition teams will once again be allowed to create and submit Team Avatars that will be used to represent their teams during DESTINATION: DEEP SPACE Presented By The Boeing Company. Today we're giving teams a heads-up on our plans for opening the Team Avatar submission system, so that once it’s opened, teams are ready to launch! The Team Avatar submission system is scheduled to be opened sometime on Friday, February 1, 2019 Friday, February 8, 2019. Last season, we opened the Team Avatar submission system early, and didn’t begin reviewing Team Avatars until February 1, so this season we decided to wait, so that teams could get more timely feedback once they’ve submitted Team Avatars. Through this submission system teams can submit new Team Avatars for consideration, delete existing Team Avatars, or review the status of a pending Team Avatar. Remember, Team Avatars from 2018 will NOT roll over to 2019, teams must submit an Avatar for use for 2019. Team Avatars will be accepted through April 1, 2019 (and that’s no joke).

It's important to note that the Team Avatar submission system is unique to FIRST Robotics Competition, and as such it is not managed through the Team Dashboard. Because of this, for privacy reasons, the Team Avatar submission system does not have the capability of emailing teams to notify them of status changes to their Team Avatars. It is the responsibility of Team Avatar submitters to check back on the status of their Team Avatar in order to receive timely status updates – it may take up to five (5) days to review a Team Avatar, but typically this is done well within 24-48 hours.

To successfully submit a Team Avatar for consideration, teams must gather these three items:

  1. Team Number - Hopefully the team number is obvious. If not, ask your team.
  2. Team Avatar - This is the PNG image you will submit that will represent your team, according to the Team Avatar specifications. Please be sure to follow the Avatar Content Rules carefully!
  3. Avatar Access Code - This is your team's Team Avatar access code that your Lead Coach/Mentors 1 or 2 can retrieve from the Team Registration System (similar to retrieving your team's Q&A Authorization Code). In the Team Dashboard, go to the `Team Options' section and click on `Payment & Product.' Then click on `Passwords/Voucher Codes' and you will find the 10 character code listed under FIRST/Avatar Key.

Once all three items have been collected, a team's official representative can go to the following address:

On that page, official team representatives must enter their Team Number and their Avatar Key Access Code, check the box to agree to the terms, and click the Continue button. The official team representative can then upload a Team Avatar for consideration, check the pending status of a Team Avatar, or delete any existing Team Avatar.

Once a Team Avatar is accepted, the pending status will be updated within the Team Avatar submission system, and the Team Avatar will appear on the team's 2019 team page - for example, the 2019 team page for team 166 is located here (note: there won’t be a Team Avatar showing until they submit one, nudge nudge):

If a Team Avatar is rejected for any reason, the Team Avatar submission system will be updated and a message will indicate why the Team Avatar was rejected and what steps need to be taken to resolve the issues. Please remember, Team Avatars can be rejected for a number of reasons – if you need to contact FIRST to provide documentation or have issues with submitting your Team Avatar, please contact us at and provide your team number and a brief description of the issue.

We can’t wait to see your Team Avatars! Have a GREAT season!

I have been trying to upload the avatar for our team and followed the image requirements that you've set. We have made the image size 40x40 px in Illustrator and exported the file as a PNG with a resolution of 72. Once we attempted to submit it, an error sign pops up and prevents us from uploading it. It says that the file is not the correct size, width, and height; however, it is. Then we tried to upload the same design but in 8.5x11 to see if maybe that would work and nothing. If you could help that would be great.

Best Wishes,

Valeria Rodriguez

Hello, Valeria. If you send us a copy of your PNG Avatar to along with your team number, we can help provide you steps to successfully submit your team's avatar.

I've been trying but it just will not work.

My team isn't new but I couldn't submit the avatar. what could I do?

Hey Kendra. Please send us an email to and send us a copy of your avatar image, your team number, and a brief description of exactly what problem you're having (exactly what steps you're taking and the results of those steps). We can then help you identify the steps needed to submit your avatar!

I tried to submit today, on the last day that avatars will be accepted, and it says that the avatar submissions are closed for the rest of the season. Is it still possible to submit, considering it is still April 1?
