Event Volunteer Role
Field Supervisor
Field Supervisors lead activity on and around the competition field to ensure efficient match execution and smooth event flow. They supervise field resetters, oversee safety, and collaborate with key event staff to manage the pace of the event.
Volunteer as a Field Supervisor
Field Supervisors help supervise the setup and maintenance on the field throughout the event with the FIRST Technical Advisor. They work closely with the FIRST Technical Advisor (FTA), or other event staff to ensure matches stay on time, the field is maintained, and safety is upheld. Field Supervisors lead Field Resetters, help manage match transitions and often support both setup and teardown of the field.
Minimum Age: 18 years old (must be post-high school or equivalent)
- Exceptions may be granted by event Volunteer Coordinators after review and approval by the local Program Delivery Partner
Experience: Either FIRST or related field experience preferred
- FIRST experience preferred including an understanding of event match cycles
- Team experience preferred; Team match participation ideal
Training: Some pre-event training required
Role Details / Responsibilities:
- Oversee setup, operation, and teardown of the competition field in collaboration with the FIRST Technical Advisor
- Lead and supervise Field Resetters
- Direct field reset process and manage field repairs
- Collaborate with the Lead Queuer, Game Announcer, Emcee, FIRST Technical Advisor Assistant (FTAA), and FTA to monitor and set/adjust game pace
- Monitor robot and team positioning for each match
- Address field damage or equipment issues promptly
- Review game rules and Field Supervisor-specific documentation pre-event
- Conduct volunteer training for and supervise Field Assembly/Disassembly and Field Resetters at event
- Implement FIRST safety standards and help manage safety for the event. Ensure volunteer and participant safety.
- Volunteers should focus on the role they are filling at that event. This includes:
- Helping avoid the appearance of bias by not cheering for one specific team when wearing official event apparel (volunteer shirt or FIRST/Partner staff clothing). Instead, we encourage volunteers to cheer for all teams equally.
- Refrain from accessing sensitive event areas unless they are necessary to fulfill your volunteer role for this event. This can include playing field access, scoring table and judging rooms.
- Wearing volunteer specific apparel (e.g. FTA shirt, Robot Inspector hat, etc) when filling that specific role.
- Sign and comply with Conflict of Interest and Disclosure Statement if applicable
- Must read and comply with the Volunteer Handbook
