Event Volunteer Role
Scorekeeper
Scorekeepers are vital to the technical and procedural success of each event, managing the scoring system, entering and displaying scores, and ensuring accurate and timely communication of results to teams, volunteers, and audience members.
Volunteer as a Scorekeeper
Scorekeepers operate the scoring software used during the event and are responsible for managing match data, rankings, and results displays. In FIRST Robotics Competition and FIRST Tech Challenge, Scorekeepers work directly with the technical field systems and the FIRST Technical Advisor to run live match scoring and post-match displays. In FIRST LEGO League, Scorekeepers input scores from paper sheets or tablets and help print and deliver ranking results. Across all programs, accuracy, focus, and comfort with computers are essential.
Minimum Age: 18 years old (must be post-high school or equivalent)
- Exceptions may be granted by event Volunteer Coordinators after review and approval by the local Program Delivery Partner
Experience: Either FIRST or related field experience required
Training: Some pre-event training required
Role Details / Responsibilities:
- Set up and operate the official scoring system before and during the event
- Input match scores and review data for accuracy
- Coordinate with other volunteers
- Post scores for teams and spectators, either digitally or in printed format
- Print and distribute reports as needed (e.g., rankings, alliance pairings, award lists)
- Support breakdown of the scoring equipment and area after the event
- Communicate clearly and professionally with event staff and teams
- Maintain confidentiality and impartiality during scoring
- Volunteers should focus on the role they are filling at that event. This includes:
- Helping avoid the appearance of bias by not cheering for one specific team when wearing official event apparel (volunteer shirt or FIRST/Partner staff clothing). Instead, we encourage volunteers to cheer for all teams equally.
- Refrain from accessing sensitive event areas unless they are necessary to fulfill your volunteer role for this event. This can include playing field access, scoring table and judging rooms.
- Wearing volunteer specific apparel (e.g. FTA shirt, Robot Inspector hat, etc) only when filling that specific role
- Sign and comply with Conflict of Interest and Disclosure Statement if applicable
- Must read and comply with the Volunteer Handbook
